History
A decree of June 27, 1938, settled up a warehouse at the « l'Hôpital Civil Français » (today Hôpital Charles Nicolle) under the name of: "Pharmacie Centrale des Hôpitaux du Royaume de Tunisie".
Proceedings a second decree issued by the Bey of Tunisia at March 31, 1956 it was reorganized in providing it with independent legal personality, financial autonomy and a new name « Pharmacie Centrale de Tunisie » (PCT). It was installed in its new premises which still exist in El Menzah, avenue Charles Nicolle (current Avenue 10 December 1948).
Le 10 mars 1958, cet organisme prit le nom de « Pharmacie Centrale de Tunisie » (PCT). Late Mr Abdelaziz MEMMI was the first Tunisian Director.
The Legislative Decree of January 16, 1961 gave the PCT the status of a governmental industrial and commercial agency, assigning her monopoly to import pharmaceutical products whose list is fixed by joint order of the Minister responsible for public health and the Minister of trade. Mr. Mohamed FEKIH was then appointed head of this organization and ruled it for 20 years.
In addition to her mission, import and distribution of pharmaceutical products, the PCT was the first entity to produce drugs.
Indeed, the labs of El Menzah developed from 1965 by recruiting young pharmacists. Various pharmaceutical forms have been developed with the collaboration of Czechs industrial pharmacists’ recruited by bilateral cooperation.
In 1970, these laboratories were transferred to the location of "Fondouk Choucha".
Since the creation in 1989 of la Société des Industries Pharmaceutiques de Tunisie (SIPHAT), the production activity has been transferred to them.
In 1990, the business was refocused on the importation and distribution of pharmaceutical products with a capital of 17.8 M TND entirely owned by the Tunisian State.
From January 1, 2006, the PCT was also responsible for the importation of vaccines, serums and allergens as well blood derivatives monopoly previously provided by the Pasteur Institute of Tunis.
